Microneedle therapy successfully treats a broad range of skin indications, including acne and scar clearance, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores and stretch marks.
The Dermapen utilises Automatic Oscillating Vertical Needling (AOVN™) technology, this microneedling technique is used to fractionally rejuvenate the skin, as well as address a wide array of pigmentary issues and other problems found in structurally compromised skin. The Microderm treatment tip is comprised of 12 microneedles, the needle penetration depth can be attuned between 0 mm and 2.5 mm.
With 12 needles and an automated vibrating function reaching a top speed of 108 revolutions per second, 1,296 puncture channels can be generated per second to create the fractional rejuvenation of the skin. Treatment is often combined with topical nutrients that stimulate, repair and accelerate resurfacing results.
With no side effects or downtime, the stimulation increases production of normal woven collagen, with scarless healing. It is safe for all skin types and colors, without risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
If you can’t tolerate downtime and possible side effects this is a treatment to consider for acne scars, wrinkles and any kind of textural issues on your face. It is also great as an anti-aging treatment, for mildly aged skin or superficial wrinkles this can be a boost treatment to help maintain your youthful appearance.
The newest editions have the innovation of a needling device working at a 90° angle, enabling the needles to enter and exit the epidermis cleanly, so there is no ripping or laceration of the skin. The oscillation diffuses nerve sensation, allowing for comfortable treatment up to 1.0 mm, even without the use of a topical local anesthetic. There is significant reduction in the discomfort previously associated with microneedling, a fast, comfortable treatment is now possible.
What is a Dermapen?
The Dermapen ™ is a Medical Skin Needling system promoting natural skin regeneration and scar repair. It has been found effective in the treatment of acne scars, aged and sun damaged skin, facial and décolleté lines and wrinkles, and stretchmarks. The Dermapen ™ is particularly effective in treating stretchmarks and scarring when combined with Radiofrequency treatments.
What does the treatment involve?
When run along the surface of the skin the fine needles of the Dermapen ™ produce a series of controlled punctures/columns. The ‘trauma’ caused by these punctures prompts the skin to produce collagen and elastin allowing the skin to repair itself and leaving a plumper, fresher, more even tone and texture to the skin. The Dermapen ™ can be used for both Cosmetic and Medical treatments, a Medical treatment will penetrate deep enough into the dermis to stimulate collagen production. A Medical treatment will use the needle length set between 1.0mm and 2.5mm. For optimal results, a series of 3-6 treatments is recommended with a gap of about 6 weeks between procedures. After thoroughly cleansing the skin, a local anaesthetic cream can be applied to the treatment area for 45-60 minutes with the treatment itself then taking about 20 minutes. The treatment is generally well tolerated with only minor discomfort reported.
What can I expect after a treatment?
Your skin will appear red immediately after the procedure, much like mild sunburn, with some pinpoint bleeding where the needles have entered the skin. Your skin may feel tight, warm or itchy. You can expect this to settle within 48 hours. Minor flaking or dryness is not unusual following treatment and some people have reported mila (small white spots) which usually resolve without any intervention. Hyperpigmentation (darkening of skin in areas) has also been reported in rare cases, resolving within 4 weeks. A gentle cleanser is recommended during this time so as not to cause any further irritation and good skin hygiene is vital. You will be supplied with a post treatment skin care pack and instructed on its use. This will aid healing and soothe the skin by moisturing and protecting the skin and promoting cell regeneration. You will see a brighter, smoother appearance to your skin within 2 weeks with skin plumping taking about 6 weeks as collagen forms.
Why is UV protection important?
Following your treatment is it vital that you protect your skin from prolonged UV or sun exposure for at least 8 days, however, we recommend using a high factor sunblock well beyond this. To aid this you will be supplied with a high SPF cream as part of your post-treatment pack. Without protection from UV exposure your skin will burn more readily and can tan unpredictably.
What are the precautions and contraindications for treatment?
The Dermapen ™ is contraindicated in the following cases: clients with a history of keloid scarring, active Herpes Simplex Virus I, infected skin, warts, skin cancers, or solar keratoses in proposed treatment area. Those on anti-coagulation therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, high dose corticosteroids and oral retinoids are also unsuitable. It is also not recommended if you are pregnant or breast feeding or have uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. The stainless steel needles of the Dermapen ™ contain 8% nickel, and although no adverse effects have been reported to date, for those with a severe nickel allergy, an alternative therapy will be recommended.
