The Benefits
Your Questions Answered
What is a Dermapen?
The Dermapen ™ is a microneedling treatment promoting natural skin regeneration and scar repair. It has been found effective in the treatment of acne scars, aged and sun damaged skin, facial lines as well as wrinkles, and stretch marks. The Dermapen ™ is particularly effective in treating stretch marks and scarring when combined with Radiofrequency treatments.
What does the microneedling treatment involve?
The fine needles of the Dermapen ™ produce a series of controlled punctures when run along the skin. The ‘trauma’ caused by these punctures prompts the skin to produce collagen and elastin. This allows the skin to repair itself and leaving a plumper, fresher, more even tone as well as texture to the skin.
The treatment takes about 20 minutes. You can apply local anaesthetic to the treatment area for 45-60 minutes to reduce discomfort. The treatment is generally well tolerated with only minor discomfort reported.
Between 3-6 treatments should be undertaken to achieve the best results. There should be a 6-week gap between treatments.
What can I expect after a microneedling treatment?
Your skin will appear red immediately after the procedure. There will also be some pinpoint bleeding where the needles have entered the skin.
Your skin may feel tight, warm or itchy. However, you can expect this to settle within 48 hours.
Minor flaking or dryness is not unusual following treatment. Some people have also reported mila (small white spots) which usually resolve on their own.
In rare cases, darkening of skin can appear, clearing within 4 weeks. You should use a gentle cleaner during this time to reduce irritation. Good skin hygiene is vital.
You will be supplied with a post treatment skin care pack. This will aid healing and soothe the skin by moisturising and protecting the skin. You will see a brighter, smoother appearance to your skin within 2 weeks. Skin plumping taking about 6 weeks as collagen forms.
Why is UV protection important?
Following your treatment, is it vital that you protect your skin from prolonged UV or sun exposure for at least 8 days. However, we recommend using a high factor sunblock well beyond this. A high SPF cream is part of your post-treatment pack to aid this. Without protection from UV exposure your skin will burn more readily and can tan unpredictably.
